What Is a Training Score?

A single number (0-100) that measures how well you train, not how strong you are. A beginner with perfect habits can outscore an elite rider who trains recklessly.

The Training Score evaluates four behavioral components of your training: consistency, intensity distribution, load management, and recovery compliance. Each component is weighted and combined into your score.

The 4 Components

Consistency

35%

How often you complete your planned workouts over a rolling 4-week window. Missing sessions tanks this component. Showing up, even for shorter rides, keeps it high.

Target: 5 rides/week. You hit 4 last week and 5 the three weeks before. Consistency score: 90+.

Intensity Distribution

25%

How closely your training follows the 80/20 polarized model. About 80% of your time should be easy (Zone 1-2) and 20% should be hard (Zone 4+). Too much time in Zone 3 drags this down.

You rode 8 hours this week. 6.5 hours were easy, 1.5 hours were intervals. That is a clean 80/20 split.

Load Management

20%

Whether you are increasing training volume at a safe rate. The sweet spot is 5-10% more volume week over week. Jumping 30% in one week flags a red zone. Dropping volume too fast also gets flagged.

Last week: 7 hours. This week: 7.5 hours. That is a safe 7% increase. Load Management score stays high.

Recovery Compliance

20%

Whether you are taking enough rest. This tracks rest day adherence and back-to-back hard day avoidance. Training hard is easy. Resting when you should is what separates good training from burnout.

You planned 2 rest days this week and took both. No back-to-back hard sessions. Recovery score: 95+.

How Scoring Works

Each component produces a sub-score from 0-100. Those sub-scores are combined using the weights above (35/25/20/20) into your overall Training Score.

Dynamic difficulty: The thresholds tighten as your score rises. Getting from 30 to 50 is straightforward. Getting from 80 to 90 requires genuine discipline. Getting above 95 requires weeks of near-perfect training behavior.

Streak multiplier: Consecutive weeks of compliant training earn a bonus multiplier (up to 1.15x). One bad week resets the multiplier, not your entire score.

Data confidence: The more data Nivvy has, the more precise your score. Power meter data gives the highest ceiling. Heart rate is solid. RPE-only works but caps your potential score slightly lower because the system has less certainty about your actual training zones.

The 6 Cyclist Types

Based on your training behavior, Nivvy classifies you as one of 6 character types. Each type reveals your biggest strength and your biggest blind spot.

👻

The Phantom

Struggles with showing up consistently

Build a minimum viable ride. Even 20 minutes counts.

🚀

The Rocket

Goes hard every session, skips rest

Schedule easy days like you schedule intervals. They are not optional.

🎲

The Wildcard

Talented but inconsistent week to week

Commit to a weekly minimum. Three rides, no exceptions.

🛡️

The Tank

Never misses but never rests

One complete rest day per week. Your body adapts during rest, not during rides.

📊

The Analyst

Perfect plan, perfect recovery, never pushes hard

Add one session per week where you go deep into the red. Comfort is the enemy.

🎯

The Metronome

Balanced, disciplined, the gold standard

Keep doing what you are doing. You are the template.

Why Training Score Matters

Most training apps measure outputs: how many watts you pushed, how far you rode, how fast you went. Those numbers tell you what happened on one ride. They do not tell you whether your training is actually working.

The Training Score measures the process. Are you showing up? Are you training at the right intensities? Are you progressing at a safe rate? Are you recovering enough?

A rider with a high Training Score will get faster over time. That is not a guess. It is what the science of training physiology predicts when consistency, polarization, progressive overload, and recovery are all in place.

In Nivvy, your Training Score determines your league placement and your progression through 9 immersive environment tiers. It is the single number that connects everything in the app.
